It’s now no secret that McLaren and Honda will split ways after the 2017 F1 season with confirmation given to Sky Sports. Honda and McLaren have split in the past, also back in 1992, and this is what their driver Ayrton Senna had to say back then.

A reporter found Ayrton Senna shortly after Honda announced their pullout from F1 and Senna replied by saying,

“I knew already for some time that this could happen during this year. I was still hoping that maybe things would change but realistically speaking I knew this was going to happen. It’s a shame. (Chokes back some tears)

If we look on the positive and we look at the achievements we made together I feel honored of being part of the Honda team, the Honda power, to be driven by Honda so that’s the way it is.

I’d just like to say thank you to all of you there in Wako, in Tochigi, In Tokyo…all over Japan for the efforts throughout the years and all the achievements we’ve had together. ”

As Senna ended this short interview, he sprints off towards his trailer wiping what are presumably tears.

One doesn’t have to imagine that hard what the reactions will be of drivers Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne who’ve both never podiumed once with Honda power units behind their backs. Honda only has been a source of a constant headache for both drivers with lackluster performance and unreliability in their three years together, the best being a 5th place finish in Hungary for Alonso and a 6th place finish also in Hungary for Vandoorne. No tears will be shed when either is interviewed about their views on Honda.

Next year, McLaren will use Renault power units and Torro Rosso will use Honda power units, a switch in power unit suppliers.
