This 2004 Oldsmobile Alero GLS is headed to the auction block as truly the last new Oldsmobile from the factory to ever go on sale.
Mention Oldsmobile Alero and you’ll probably think about the one your aunt drives to daily mass but this one is extra special. According to Fox News on their bittersweet report about this otherwise ordinary car they dropped earlier yesterday (Dec. 13, 2017) State Line Auction in Waverly, New York is preparing this car for a drive across the auction block later on today. Check out a shot of this Alero Final 500 edition (#500 of course) below.

Since 1998, pretty much every single Oldsmobile Alero was built at Oldsmobile’s factory in Lansing, Michigan. Underneath the hood every a majority of them was either a 2.2L Ecotec four-cylinder good for 140 HP/150 lb-ft, a 2.4L LD9 four cylinder with 150 HP and 155 lb-ft or an optional 3.4L LA1 V6 with a whopping 170 HP and 200 lb-ft. Throughout its run, there were minimal changes to this revival of classic coke bottle styling.
According to GoodCarBadCar, all the way to the very end of its run, sales of the Oldsmobile, despite not changing much, were commendable. In 2003 Oldsmobile managed to push out 99,123 units.
To commemorate the car’s final trip down the assembly line, 500 Final edition Aleros were made which featured custom logos, a dark cherry metallic paint, and a plate featuring the car’s number.
This car, #500, was signed by many of the factory workers who wrenched on it by placing their signatures under the hood. GM kept it in tip-top shape, stored away in their Heritage Center for more than a decade until finally releasing this Alero out into the wild to the highest bidder.
Apparently, this isn’t the only final edition Oldsmobile on the auction block as there is an Oldsmobile Cierra and Cutlas making their way into another owner’s possession soon.
Perhaps, this is a signal from GM that they’re turning a new leaf in this era of smaller engines, alternative energies, and autonomous driving cars.
I’ll update you on the final bid price of that car so go ahead and bookmark this post and write yourself a sticky note to come back!
