An impatient driver tried to cut in front of a semi using an illegal lane change only to get sideswiped by the semi’s trailer.
Michigan commuter and Redditor /u/3t9l shared headshaking dashcam footage from an I-75 interchange from earlier last week (Dec 4, 2024) showing an impatient driver in a Mercedes recklessly trying to cut in front a semi driver with a trailer only to try it in their blind spot, resulting in them getting sideswiped.
Check out their dashcam video below (original thread linked here.)
As the video shows, OP is driving behind a driver in a silver Mercedes sedan who seems to be in a rush, both headed towards Exit 56B off the 75 towards the Davison Freeway Interchange.
Suddenly, the Mercedes driver tries to get in front of a semi-driver with a trailer by recklessly cutting the gore point in front of the Merge Left sign.
Here’s where it all played out, highlighted in red.

And, here’s a screenshot of the illegal lane change.

In the semi’s blind spot and while the semi is signaling to the lane the Mercedes driver is charging through, the Mercedes continues forward.
With nowhere to go, the Mercedes gets sideswiped, causing thousands in damage to their car.
“Further stupid: This pair of lanes merge back together within 500 feet, and both lanes have the option to take the left path. After the merge is a four-lane freeway that’s usually pretty empty that this dude could have used to pass,” OP points out.
OP clarified although he didn’t stick around, he is trying his best to contact the trucking company in question.
“I am contacting the operating company though so hopefully they can make that right. I’m not sure if it would help the trucker, but to his credit, he is already starting the merge when the Merc does his swing out. You can also see him jerk the cab to the right when he realizes but it’s both too little and too late.”
” All that matters is the truck signaled our intentions and they were the only vehicle who could have gotten into that lane legally because they were at the spot where the white line stopped. The car decided to cross the white lines and the median illegally and that is why they got the boom,” /u/Creedokid definitively commented.
“The car is 1000% of fault and an idiot in a car for sure.”
Hopefully, that trucking company gets the footage to the right driver and exonerates him from any wrongdoing.
In Michigan, reckless lane changes like this are a form of reckless driving, punishable by a fine of up to $500 and up to 93 days in jail.
