Those who saw the video agree, the distracted driver had to be on their phone.
Marylander and Redditor /u/ChevyTahoe1 shared headshaking dashcam footage from Columbia from earlier at the tail end of December (Dec 28, 2024) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing what most commenters hypothesize was a distracted driver on their phone heading straight for OP’s dashcam, mid-curve.
Check out OP’s dashcam footage below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
As mentioned, the incident happened in the 5000 block of Columbia Rd. in Columbia, MD (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s dashcam footage shows, he’s driving along Columbia Rd in the middle of a dark, stormy morning.
Suddenly, the lights of an oncoming car can be seen headed straight for him.
With plastic traffic attenuators to his immediate left, he could’ve veered into them but chose to not damage his car in hopes the other driver would come to his senses.
He lays on his horn to get the other driver’s attention, and it works.
“He was coming straight at me fast, and didn’t start to veer off until I honked.”
At the last second, the driver swerves out of the way and both narrowly avoid what would’ve been one nasty collision.
“Probably staring at their phone around a corner. It’s just sad to see honestly,” /u/Vidson05 comments.
“Holy f***. GREAT REACTION!!!! Saved your life and theirs,” /u/gellybelli added.
“That…was terrifying,” /u/karma_the_sequel replied.
According to the Maryland DOT,
“Distracted driving contributes to 48 percent of all crashes in Maryland. Each of these injuries and deaths were preventable.”
Who would’ve thought that one of the best things you can do for your driving safety and the safety of your fellow drivers was not to look at your phone behind the wheel?
