A rear dashcam shows a distracted driver holding a phone at the moment of impact.
Katy commuter and Redditor /u/Erodarte shared headshaking dashcam footage from Cinco Rancho from earlier last week (Feb 7, 2025) showing a distracted driver on their phone moments before and at the moment of impact of this rear-end collision.
Check out OP’s dashcam footage below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident happened in Cinco Rancho, Katy, TX in the 1600 block of Peek Rd (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s dashcam rear footage shows, they’re stopped on Peek Rd. waiting for traffic in front of them to move.
” I was waiting to turn to the right on a traffic light…”
OP slowly creeps forward, prompting the driver in a red Toyota Corolla from the mid-’90s behind them to move forward, too.
The Corolla driver is distracted because, as OP slows in response to traffic, the Corolla doesn’t and drives at speed into the rear of OP’s vehicle.
A phone can be seen in the driver’s hands at the moment of impact.
“Did the other carro crash on you?,” you can hear OP’s presumed son ask.
Thankfully, the other driver is aware of his screw-up and begins to step out of his car to talk to OP.
To make matters worse, according to OP, the other driver confessed to him that he was here illegally, asking him not to call the police.
“He told me he was here illegally and to please not call the police. He gave me his insurance right away. He also said he was distracted because he was fired from his job,” OP explained.
Another Redditor pointed out that his registration tags were expired, too.
“Damn. Turn signal going and still texting after the fact. Slam dunk case,” /u/Elluminated commented.
“Don’t people talk to text? What a dumbass, just wait until his insurance finds out,” /u/archameidus added.
“Holy s***. Your reaction is so calm lol. Great role model!,” /u/snippsville complimented.
You’d think if you’re here illegally, you’d be extra careful behind the wheel.
In this instance, that is not the case.
