A driver’s impatience might’ve ended with a police officer t-boning them, delaying his response and possibly causing a huge accident.

Philly commuter and Redditor /u/Silencer555 shared headshaking dashcam footage from the end of January (Jan 31, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing an impatient driver attempting to run a red only to narrowly avoid t-boning a responding police officer.

Check out their dashcam footage embedded below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened at the intersection of Market St. and N 42nd St in Philadelphia (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As OP’s dashcam footage shows, he’s stopped at the aforementioned intersection waiting for his light to turn green.

A driver in a silver VW Jetta can be seen creeping into the intersection, attempting to fully run the red light.

Another Redditor pointed out that, if you look closely above the lights at the intersection, you can see a white, flashing light, indicating the…

“The strobe light light changer. You can see the white light above the Midas sign flashing, telling traffic from the right it’s good to go. Opticom system,” /u/Economy_Release_988 points out.

The Opticom system in use.

Before the Jetta makes it past the halfway point, a responding police cruiser can be seen driving past them, on their way to a call.

The Jetta driver brakes, narrowly avoiding T-boning the cop car.

Another police cruiser closely following drives by the Jetta after the incident, presumably dumbfounded at the Jetta driver’s decision.

“The other cop just casually rolling by the guy sitting in the middle of the intersection kills me,” /u/OrionIT commented.

“We both had our hands up like “wtf were you thinking bro?”,” OP replied.

“He’s an idiot but lucky he didn’t cause a terrible accident. Ppl risk killing themselves just to get to their destination a few minutes faster. Love Odesza btw. One of my favs along with Rufus & Goldroom,” /u/J-nathan added.

In Philadelphia, red light runners are subject to a base fine of at least $25 before fees (which can total $200 or more) and three points on your driving record.
