To top it all off, the school crosswalk the driver blasted through had a student walking through it at the time.
Fletcher/Hendersonville commuter and Redditor /u/SenorFluffyNuts1 shared headshaking dashcam footage to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit from earlier this week (May 13, 2025) showing a driver in a Volkswagen GTI think school zone speed limits aren’t for them, opting to pass on double solid yellow and speeding through a crosswalk to boot.

The incident happened along the 900 block of Howard Gap Rd, across from the Fletcher Academy (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s dashcam footage shows, he’s driving along Co Rd. 1006 AKA Howard Gap Rd. when he enters a school zone with a 25 MPH speed limit.
To OP’s credit, he doesn’t, at least according to his dashcam, ever go above 25 MPH.
However, an impatient driver in a dark coloured VW GTI hot hatch thinks this is too slow, regardless of the speed limit, and takes matters into his own driving hands.
With a quick stab of gas, the GTI crosses into cross traffic over double solid yellow lines, gets above the speed limit, and speeds by OP.
To add unnecessary danger to the situation, there happens to be a student just finishing crossing the hatched crosswalk.
A moment earlier, and that student would’ve been smack dab in the middle of the crosswalk just as the VW GTI blew through.
As pointed out by OP, this particular location is busy with students as Fletcher Academy appears to be a boarding school.
“It’s an academy with boarding. I’ve seen a lot of close calls through there,” OP mentions.
Thankfully, nothing comes of the situation, and all parties involved suffer no consequences.
“Oh, I would definitely forward that to the police, post on Facebook, Nextdoor, and send to the local news station. That’s the kind of person that needs to be publicly shamed in every way,” one of the top comments from /u/EagleScout1984 reads.

In North Carolina, speeding through a school zone carries a hefty $438 fine, that’s all the fees included, and 3 points on your driving record.
