A Tesla driver’s impatience merging onto US-79 almost caused his car to get totaled.

Milam County commuter and Redditor /u/Castle_Douglas shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier in May (May 8, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a Tesla driver fail to yield attempting to turn left onto Cameron Ave by improperly using a center turn lane, almost causing his own T-bone accident.

Check out the dashcam footage embedded below with the original Reddit Thread linked here.

The incident happened on W Cameron Ave (US-79) just before the intersection with Childress Dr (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As OP’s dashcam footage shows, he’s driving along this stroad at around 50 MPH.

As he approaches the driveway to La Carretta Mexican Cuisine, a driver in a Tesla Model 3 pulls out of the driveway and attempts to get into the center turn lane, but is blocked by a driver in a white truck.

However, as pointed out by other Redditors, center turn lanes are for turning off the road, and not for turning into.

According to the Longview Police Department on the matter,

“Many drivers use this lane as a merge lane, typically when they are exiting a private drive or parking lot and are wanting to go to the left on the roadway they are entering. This maneuver is illegal — and dangerous — and the driver can be ticketed if an officer sees it occur.”

OP slows, almost coming to a panic stop, all the while laying on his horn.

Thankfully, he avoids almost t-boning the Tesla driver, and everyone involved escapes unscathed.

“I stopped giving the middle finger to folks on the road, I give them a thumbs down and this seems to work better lol,” the top comment from /u/jstasir reads.

“This happens so often in Florida, we don’t even talk about it, let alone post,” /u/Zseamp suggested .

“Just go around them while increasing your speed. Extend your middle finger upright to God.”

“In his ever so slight defense, it looks like he was trying to turn into the center lane to wait to merge into traffic, but the oncoming truck started using it to turn and blocked him,” /u/Moose_Nuts pointed out.

“Driving is chaotic…sometimes s*** just happens.”

However, as pointed out, what the Tesla driver did is an illegal maneuver and is a ticketable offense.

In Texas, improper use of center turn lanes can result in fines up to $200.
