This dashcam owner credits VR Gran Turismo for his improved driving reflexes.
Tampa commuter and Redditor /u/mattgolf0505 shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier last week (July 17, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver in a BMW pulling out onto Gandy Blvd without even showing the slightest attempt to yield, causing OP to emergency brake and swerve into a driveway to avoid what would’ve been an imminent t-bone collision.
Typical BMW drivers, am I right?
Check out the dashcam footage below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
As mentioned, the incident occurred along the 3100 block of W Gandy Blvd, near the entrance to ABC Fine Wine & Spirits (Exact location on Google Maps linked here).
In the dashcam footage, we can see OP cruising along W Gandy Blvd, minding his own business.
OP does admit to being over the speed limit, but not by much (who among us?)
“Speed limit is 35, but a quarter mile back on the same street is 45mph. Tons of drivers still go 50 in this stretch here, they even started to put cops on the side streets to catch ‘em .”
As he approaches the aforementioned business, the dashcam makes out a BMW approaching the exit to that driveway and then, not less than 20 feet from said driveway, the BMW darts out, not yielding for traffic with the right of way at all.
Most people in that situation stomp on the brakes and hold on for dear life; however, OP had the option to swerve into the driveway, a millisecond decision.
Had he continued forward, he would’ve T-boned the BMW.
Thankfully, he makes it into the driveway, avoiding what would’ve been one potentially injurious accident.
OP credits Gran Turismo for his improved defensive driving reflexes.
“I’ve been playing VR Gran Turismo. I believe it has now paid off,” he replied to a commenter complimenting him on his cat-like reflexes.
“Great job avoiding that crash, also might wanna change your pants after that,” /u/60nocolus added.
“Always aim for where they’ve been when trying to avoid, never where they are headed. Nicely done!,” /u/CalgaryFacePalm suggested.
The consensus from driving professionals is that, when avoiding accidents, most should avoid braking and swerving simultaneously.
However, some situations warrant one over the other or a combination of both.
In OP’s case, given a clear driveway to swerve into and continue through, that made his last-second swerve a viable option.
In Florida, failure to yield like this can result in a fine of up to $500 before additional fees and 4 points on your driving record.
