Faced with a somewhat challenging turning situation, this distracted driver chose to go against traffic.
Providence area commuter and Redditor /u/BimmerDash shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier last week (July 28, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver yapping on her phone, turning the wrong way onto River St.
Check out her hare-brained decision below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident took place at the intersection of Charles St. and W River St. in Providence (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the dashcam shows, OP heads up towards the aforementioned intersection from River St.
Before coming to a stop ahead, a driver in a Nissan Versa can already be seen stopped well past the limit line, presenting an obstruction for potential turners.
Then, a driver in a silver Honda Accord approaches the intersection intending to turn.
Distracted, talking on their phone, they make the split, hare-brained decision to thread the needle and drive between OP and the driver over the limit line, entering River St. into the wrong lane.
“A lot of people are blaming the white car driver, stopping past the stop line,” OP clarified in the comments.
“…. if the car stayed at the stop line, they wouldn’t be able to see the traffic coming from the left, so it is unfortunately necessary to edge past the stop line…That said, there’s no justification for the left-turn vehicle to cut into that turn the way she did. Had there been another car behind me turning left, she would likely have slammed into them.”
The clip ends there, so we can only assume that nothing of consequence happened behind OP.
“You know, I’m impressed they split the gap without hitting anyone. If you are gonna be an idiot, be a lucky one,” the top comment from /u/DownVoterOfAll commented.
“No one has mentioned the STOP sign that’s almost been overtaken by ivy,” /u/Sand-NotSnow pointed out.
In Rhode Island, distracted drivers on their phones typically get hit with a $100 fine before all the fees.
Turning into the wrong side of the road like she did is also a civil traffic violation, subject to an $85 fine, too.
