Driver caught on dashcam was using the emergency lane not for its intended use and making an unsafe turn from the wrong lane (to say the least).
Broome County commuter and Redditor /u/Crazy-CatPerson shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier last week (Sept 11, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing the hare-brained decision of a driver using the emergency breakdown lane to make a left turn across multiple lanes of traffic.
Check out their move below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
[oc] Driver makes left turn from right shoulder
byu/Crazy-CatPerson inIdiotsInCars
The incident happened at the intersection of Vestel Parkway and the Club Binghampton Shopping Center (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the dashcam shows, OP is on Vestel Parkway, ready to go straight through the aforementioned intersection.
First, traffic can be seen turning left onto Vestel, followed by left-turners into the shopping center.
Suddenly, a driver in a Black Nissan Sentra can be seen creeping out into the intersection from the far right, specifically the breakdown lane.
To the driver’s credit, they did creep out and attempt to yield to turners with the right of way (not like he ever legally gets the right of way pulling something off illegally like this).
Thankfully, no one hits him, and a kind soul lets him cut in front of him to accommodate his hare-brained decision.
“Bonus points for the u-turning 18-wheeler not only clearing the lane before your green but also nearly jackknifing himself,” the top comment from /u/KronkLaSworda reads.
“But they are important,” /u/virtual_human sarcastically added.
“The unabashed f***ery of this illegal maneuver and overall state of driving anywhere nowadays is disheartening,” /u/11B-33T commented.
In New York, driving on the shoulder or emergency lane (VTL §1131) carries a fine of up to $150, plus surcharges, and adds 2 points to your license.
Making an improper left turn from the wrong lane (VTL §1163a) has the same penalty of up to $150 and 2 points. Both are moving violations that can also raise your insurance premiums.
