“WTF did this dumba*** college kid think would happen?”
Downtown Richmond area driver and Redditor /u/quantizedd shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier in October (Oct 4, 2025) showing the brain-dead moment a college-age kid decided it was a bright idea to ride his scooter through a busy intersection against a no-crossing signal.
Check out the embedded video below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident occurred at the intersection of N. Belvidere St. and W. Broad St., near the corner of the Institute for Contemporary Art (exact location on Google Maps linked here).
As the dashcam shows, OP is driving along US-301/N Belvidere St. when he approaches the aforementioned intersection.
Suddenly, a college-aged kid riding a rental scooter appears from the left and attempts to cross despite not having the right of way and no signal to cross.
The unfortunate, inevitable happens, and a driver in a red Hyundai Veloster clips the front wheel of the scooter rider, sending the rider onto his back.
Thankfully, it was a low-speed collision and the rider kept his head up, avoiding a nasty concussion.
“The dumba** kid was fine, I gave the footage to the people he hit and was a witness for them to the cops. I hope they did a sobriety test on him,” OP clarified in the comments.
“Was the kid trying to get an insurance payout to help him with college loans? I genuinely can’t think of another reason besides pure idiocy,” one of the top comments from /u/TheStandingMan reads.
“He either thought that people would automatically stop for his entitled a** OR he didn’t know how to brake,” /u/Entelecher added.
While the law might not consider a scooter rider a pedestrian, for a pedestrian who crosses improperly (disregards traffic) without causing serious injury, a fine in the $15 to ~$100 range is typical, depending on local ordinance and whether the violation is just a “pedestrian duty” issue vs something more serious.
