This driver was too concentrated on the other lane. They weren’t paying attention to what was unfolding in front of them.

I-376 commuter and Redditor /u/Asleep_Solution_3417 shared eye-opening dashcam footage from earlier in 2023 to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver in a Subaru Hatch trying to time his lane change into the fast lane, only to almost crash, head-on, into slowed traffic in front of him.

Check out the dashcam footage, only now seeing the light of day below, with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened on I-376 just before Exit 72B onto the Blvd of Allies, Liberty Bridge to 579 (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam shows, OP is in the middle lane (#2) of I-376 following two Subarus, a red one in front and a dark colored sedan in the fast lane.

The red Subaru signals, letting his intention known he wants to change lanes.

However, because he’s too focused on the lane change and is presumably following cars in front of him too closely, he doesn’t anticipate their sudden slowing, which they do.

The driver in the red Subaru Hatch tries their best to swerve out of the way to avoid rear-ending slowing traffic, and careens out of control as a result.

At one point, the Subaru is a full 90 degrees pointed at the middle traffic barrier separating directions of travel on 376.

They come within inches of hitting OP.

Thankfully, that driver recovered, and everyone seems to make it out of the wildly dangerous situation unscathed; however, I can’t say the same for the Subaru’s underwear.

“Guarantee you the hatchback driver learned nothing from the experience and still follows the car in front of them that closely,” the top comment from /u/PM_ME_GOOD_DOGS reads.

“The hatchback driver is a f***ing idiot. With that out of the way – nice save on his part, I’m genuinely impressed that he didn’t take himself or anyone else out,” /u/Nwcray added.

“All they had to do was slow down for three seconds, and they would have been fine. But nooooo. “Ugh brake lights in my lane. Must change lanes NOW. Staying here is not an option.” One of my biggest pet peeves on the road,” /u/KaJuNator concurred.

In Pennsylvania, careless driving is a summary offense defined under 75 Pa.C.S. § 3714(a) as operating a vehicle in careless disregard for the safety of persons or property. A conviction carries a $25–$200 fine and 3 points on your driver’s license (zuckermanfirm.com).
