Since he worked at Honda, techs wrecked 10 engines doing THIS to the OEM oil filters.
A former Parts Honda dealership specialist commented a harrowing warning to anyone who uses those blue Honda OEM oil filters, to actual Honda Techs to DIY’ers alike, that doing this in particular can likely wreck your engine.
The comment comes from a social media reel from Napa-based Honda technician Adrian Aceves, who was pointing out how to tell which Honda OEM filters are made in Japan as opposed to supposedly lesser quality Honda OEM filters made elsewhere (not in Japan)

While the reel is good information to know for Honda owners, it’s what was posted in the Facebook Reel comments that caught my eye.
I’m posting what this former Honda Parts Specialist commented below with it verbatim, too.
“I worked at a Honda dealership in parts, and I have to say we’ve probably replaced 10 customers’ engines in one year…. What the technicians were doing was sticking their finger inside the threaded hole to puncture the plastic, and this forced the plastic inside the filter, which then eventually traveled around the engine clogged it and starving it of oil, causing premature detonation. All because people were sticking their fingers inside the threaded hole to break the cellophane.”
Simply put, what techs were doing was opening the oil filters the easy way, by sticking their fingers through the protective plastic that covered the oil filter hole.
Naturally, this raised the likelihood that someone could push the plastic into the oil filter itself.
What they should’ve done is slice or peel off the plastic, preferably away from the oil filter hole.
A preventable mistake like that caused the dealership thousands for a replacement engine, not to mention the multi-day process and dozens of man-hours that dealerships could’ve spent elsewhere.
There’s nothing wrong with choosing the “best,” like an OEM oil filter.
However, even the best parts make no difference when the one using them is so careless.
