This driver in a Honda Odyssey brute forced their way onto I-277 from the wrong lane, causing a victim to brake unexpectedly, trigerring rear-end collision.

Charlotte-area driver and Redditor /u/Yingfa93 shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier in February (Feb 4, 2026) showing a minivan driver improperly changing lanes from E 12th St onto an I-277 on-ramp, causing a driver next to them to brake to let them merge, inadvertently triggering a rear-end collision that turned into a hit-and-run.

Check out the unfortunate set of events that played out in the dashcam video below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

[oc] Idiots in Minivan and Jeep tagteam a RAV4
by u/Yingfa93 in IdiotsInCars

The incident happened at the intersection of N Caldwell St. and E 12th St near the on-ramp onto I-277 N (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam shows, OP is following three vehicles: a RAV-4 in front of a Jeep Wrangler, both ahead of him, and headed onto the I-277N on-ramp. Next to them is a driver in a Honda Odyssey in a lane marked to go left onto E 12th St.

Suddenly, the driver in the Odyssey wants to enter I-277 and makes a simultaneous signal/improper lane change from E 12th St onto the on-ramp in front of the RAV-4.

The RAV-4 is forced to brake to let them in, triggering the Jeep behind them to emergency brake, too, but it’s too late, the Jeep slams into the rear of the RAV-4.

Flumoxxed, the RAV-4 driver comes to a stop at the entrance of the on-ramp and just stays there.

The Odyssey driver heads into I-277, and the Jeep driver?

They split, committing hit-and-run.

OP tried to do the right thing by sending the video to the proper authorities for reference, but it seems like they won’t do much, regardless.

“You can see the whole video; they (the Jeep driver) just drive off, and I’m not about to chase them on the highway. I called CLT police, but they’re incompetent. I called the non-emergency line, explaining what I saw, and the operator said they typically don’t third parties make claims, and so I told her that makes no sense, so she got a supervisor, she said a sergeant would call me back.” OP explains to a commenter asking if he passed the video along.

“The sergeant calls me and says nobody called in about this, but they can take the license plates down and have an officer (or somebody? I don’t really remember) call me back, but still nowhere to send the video. I don’t know, weird people, weird city, I hate it here, I don’t know why they didn’t just give me an email to send the video to and leave it at that.”

In North Carolina, rear-ending another vehicle and fleeing the scene is considered a hit-and-run. If only property damage occurs, it’s a Class 1 misdemeanor with fines up to $5,000, 4 points on your license, and up to 120 days in jail. If the crash causes injury, it becomes a felony with much harsher prison terms and fines. (N.C. Gen. Stat. § 20-166)
