Re-routing would’ve added 5 minutes to their commute.

SoCal commuter and Redditor /u/ShortAd4243 shared headshaking, but typical, dashcam footage from the 405 from earlier in February (Feb 9, 2026) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing an unhinged driver thread the needle between traffic delineators and the traffic barrier attenuator at the end of a gore point just so they don’t miss their exit.

Here’s the dashcam footage embedded below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened at the 405/605 interchange, technically in the city of Seal Beach (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam shows, OP is driving along the 405 Express Lane headed northbound.

In front of him and to his left is a driver in a white Corolla in the split headed towards the 605 Express Lane.

With traffic delineators to their right and hatch markings indicating a gore point, drivers are not supposed to attempt to drive through that area.

As the saying goes, bad drivers never miss their exit.

Intending to stay on the 405, the Corolla driver signals, heads through the gore point, and barely makes it back onto the 405, coming within feet of crashing head-on into the traffic barrier attenuator at the literal end of the gore point.

As pointed out by OP and confirmed on Google Maps,

“They would lose around 5 minutes backtracking. The signs are really clear and go on for 2 miles.”

Thankfully, nothing came of the incident; however, it is a daily occurrence, these kinds of road shenanigans.

“You will see 50 different dumb maneuvers a day on SoCal freeways. After 25 years of driving, I still go, “Really?!” I really wish I could use cruise control or relax,” OP replied to a comment complimenting OP on their defensive driving maneuvers.

In Seal Beach, CA, a “gore point” violation means driving over or through the painted chevron area separating lanes or ramps, enforced under California Vehicle Code §21651(b) or §21461(a). It’s a one-point moving violation on your license. The base fine is modest, but with Orange County fees, it usually totals roughly $230–$490.
