Clueless driver pulls an unsafe driving manuever hopping across gore point, then taking their sweet time to merge.
San Diego-area commuter and Redditor /u/Dexter_McThorpan shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier last week (Mar 8, 2026) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a confused driver not realizing they could’ve gone straight and, thinking they missed their left-hand exit, decided to brute force their way through a gore point, taking their sweet time to merge, too.
Check out the dashcam footage embedded below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident happened on the 163 headed northbound at the exit with Friars Rd. (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the dashcam shows, OP is headed north on 163 towards the 805.
As he approaches the off-ramp to continue on the 163 under Friars Rd, a driver in a silver Dodge Dakota can be seen making their way across the gore point, an area of the freeway not meant to be driven across.
“Yesterday, on my way in, this dude missed the left-hand exit going north on the 163. There was nothing but an empty road behind me. I *thought* he was gonna wait.”
He, in fact, did not stop and, instead of waiting or hitting the gas to get up to speed, the Dakota driver took their sweet time, not realizing they’d caused the dashcam owner behind them to slow from 65 to 35 in mere seconds.
“Stop f***ing doing dumb s***. I’d like to get to and from without becoming a statistic.”
To put the driver’s move in perspective, those familiar with the area, not to mention signage indicating so, he could’ve stayed in his lane and eventually merged back onto the 163 N, regardless.

Thankfully, nothing came of the incident; however, that driver likely learned nothing from his near rear-end collision.
“IF YOU MISS YOUR EXIT OR GET OFF ON THE WRONG ONE YOU KEEP GOING AND REROUTE. You do not, in any circumstances, make completely irrational, dangerous, and unexpected moves. You do not get to endanger the people around you because you made a mistake. FFS,” one of the top comments from /u/genescheezesthatpls reads.
“It’s the 805 vibes leaking into the 163. Someone needs to burn sage behind their vehicle. 😂 all jokes aside, there are some mouth breathers out there that shouldn’t have driver’s licenses,” local /u/ComfortableFortune51 added.
In California, driving through a gore point and merging slowly can get you a $238 fine and 1 point on your record. It violates CVC §21755(b) (improper use of gore area) and CVC §21658(a) (impeding traffic). This moving violation can also raise your insurance rates.
