Honda of Sumner in Washington decided that they’d like to screw over potential buyers for a Honda Civic Type R and slapped on a whopping $20,000 markup on a brand new 2017 Honda Civic Type R.

There’s a special place in dealership H E double hockey stick for dealerships who really go above and beyond when it comes to tacking on an exorbitant markup on the MSRP. It looks like Honda of Sumner might take the cake when it comes to the Honda’s new Civic Type R and markups. According to a listing I came across thanks to some keen-eyed Civic Type R shoppers on the internet earlier yesterday (Nov. 27, 2017) this Aegean Blue 2017 Honda Civic Type R is being sold for $54,775. Yup, that’s pretty much a 56 percent increase over the base price. Check out a couple of screenshots of the offending ad below.

This Honda Civic Type R was given a +$20K markup!

The Honda Civic Type R will be an uncommon car for the American market with 6,000 units headed to American shores over the rest of this year and next year. The factory in Swindon, UK is churning out an average of 75 units a day (to be sold globally of course.) While that 6,000 unit number is widely cited, it’s not exactly written in stone. Additionally, with the availability of more in the next year, if you really want one, chances are you can get one.

Dealerships, like Honda of Sumner, are taking advantage of the lack of knowledge of how many Civic Type R’s are going to be made and passing that misinformation off as a dealer added markup to take advantage of the hype. Thankfully, we live in an internet record and “there are receipts.”

The unofficial list of dealerships selling at MSRP and heinously overcharging is being documented on this CivicX.com thread. If Honda of Sumner manages to sell this overpriced Civic Type R, they’ll join at least three other dealerships bold enough to pull such a stunt.

To be fair, a dealer added the markup on this car is sadly expected. The average seems to be between $5K-8K tacked on. But adding $20K is downright atrocious.
