There are two words that have those other drag packages shaking in their boots and it’s “Cobra Jet.” Ford announced its return for 2018.

The Dodge Demon’s had it’s time in the limelight as far as factory bragging rights down the quarter mile are concerned because Ford just dropped a bombshell of an announcement for turnkey drag cars. According to Ford Performance in an official press release they dropped earlier today (Apr. 18,2018) the Cobra Jet is coming back and it’ll absolutely stomp on the Dodge Demon if they line up to rip one on drag night. Although Ford only dropped a teaser image I’ve already posted as the cover photo above, I’ve just gone ahead and put what the 2016 Cobra Jet looks like below.

According to Ford, this new Cobra Jet will lay down a mid-8 quarter mile time at 150 MPH. Although Ford hasn’t put any power numbers down, you can extrapolate power numbers based on the fact that this Cobra Jet will weigh in the neighborhood of 3,300 pounds. Plug that into Greg Raven’s famous horsepower guesstimator for RWD vehicles and out pops an estimated 1,062 HP that this 5.2L Supercharged Ford engine will have to put out. I’ve rounded up to a nice round 1,100 HP.

This sort off does make sense given that Dodge was able to pull off a 9.6-second quarter mile from 840 HP in their Demon. Also, the 2016 Cobra Jet already makes north of 1,000 HP. Presumably, Ford will want to outdue themselves this time around.

The only downside to this drag car is it’s not street legal. No Cobra Jet made ever came with a VIN so it can’t be registered. 68 will be made this time around.

In addition to that supercharged 5.2L under the hood you can expect Ford Performance to put the 2018 Mustang through a rigorous diet and strip out all the non-essentials. Aiding that honking beast of an engine will be a

…unique four-link rear suspension, along with a Ford 9-inch solid rear axle from Strange Engineering. Race add-ons include NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech FIA seats, and a drag race-specific coil-over suspension with specially designed Weld Racing wheels with 50th anniversary badging.

No word on official specs, pricing or when you can order one. But with the 2016 Cobra Jet closing in on a six-digit figure and this one to top that, it won’t be for everyone and all of them will probably be spoken for by the time they DO announce anything officially.

Also, they’ll probably auction off the first one…like they do.
