Some spy photos of a refreshed Honda Civic Type R hit the internet but is this a more powerful Civic Type R meant to retake their Nurburgring Ring Record once it falls…again?

Here at Tire Meets Road we don’t shy away from making bold predictions based on what amounts to an inkling, but hear me out. I low-key think Honda is preparing a special Nurburgring edition Honda Civic Type R that’ll be slightly more powerful, have better aero (as the photos show), and will be ready to take whatever the Renault Megane RS throws its way.

According to Autoblog, two variants of the Civic Type R were spotted testing at the Nurburgring.

First, there was one sporting a smaller spoiler. Could this mean Honda is preparing for a higher average top speed if they decide to take back the ‘Ring record they’ll eventually lose?

Then, a Honda Civic Type R with the traditional spoiler was spotted with both front and rear showing minor aero changes. Up front were two vents meant to channel air for an unknown reason integrated into the bumper. Outback, the rear bumper, Honda is doing something with those two large fake vents, again, purpose unknown.

Perhaps Honda is testing the changes out on each other and deciding what would result in a faster time, a smaller spoiler, better aero or a combination of the two Civics?

Of course, we’re interested in what’s underneath the hood but these spy shots don’t show anything concrete. This Civic Type R is still sporting the same three-shot exhaust to muffle sounds at high speeds so we can only assume the powertrain is much the same in front.

If you’re wondering, yes Renault is testing with their new RS Trophy on the Nurburgring and they’re testing hard. This Megane RS will weigh slightly more than the Civic Type R thanks to four-wheel steering capabilities. I reckon it’ll be just as powerful, if not more to compensate for the weight compared to the Civic Type R. Autoexpress caught these shots just a few weeks ago.

Honda will lose the FWD Nurburgring record soon, this I know for sure. My question is, is this better Civic Type R they’ve got in the works testing at none other than the Nurburgring meant to fire back at Renault?

I really hope so!
