There’s only one good reason, in my opinion, that these digital license plates will get popular and that’s because advertisers will force their way onto your plates.

There’s good reason that license plates have survived as long as they have, they do exactly what they’re supposed to do without much tinkering, displaying your license plate number to local authorities. Sure, a sticker every two years sounds like such a pain, but it really isn’t. As per KTLA on their report on license plates going digital they published earlier today (Oct. 2, 2018) for $700 and $7 a month after that, you can have the privilege (or the curse) of having digital license plates put on your car. Here’s why these plates will just be another scourge to your eyeballs and another platform for ads to assault your fellow drivers.

To be fair, there are some real benefits to these digital plates. According to Reviver Auto, the main supplier and monopoly holder of these plates. The main benefit is you don’t have to place an updated registration sticker every year. Oh, the pain of peeling off a sticker. With these plates connected to GPS and a cellular network, registration can all be handled electronically, presumably through an app, so no more trips to the DMV isf problems arise. This also makes buying and selling your car a snap as now you can de-register your plates and register new ones without having to wait for new plates in the mail.

Sure, you can customize them, add personal messages, and overall add some of clout to your ride, however, don’t think for an instance, digital plates are going to benefit you, in the slightest. There’s a whole section on business benefits listed on Reviver Auto which already spells out the “beginning of the end” to ad-free plates.

Dubbed “business benefits” you can put on pre-approved ads of your own choosing, however, these must be pre-approved by the DMV. According to Reviver,

“Coming later this year (to our plates)

  • Targeted marketing messages via geo-fencing
  • Corporate branding and personalized messages”

The possibilities are endless once you allow ads on your car.

Imagine a future where digital plates are mandatory and now, Reviver has the market locked down on these plates. You’re stopped at a stoplight and you’ve checked the box allowing ads on your plates in exchange for a 50 percent discount on the price of the digital plate and zero monthly fees. The car behind you also has a reviver plate. Both plates communicate to one another that the plate behind you frequently stops at Starbucks on the way home. It knows this because of GPS tracking. Guess what YOUR plate will show. You guessed it, probably a quick five-second ad for Starbucks. It’s not the spelled out on their website, but I’m spelling it out for you, now.

Digital plates are great, just make them affordable, no subscription needed, and don’t put ads on them.
