With the Porsche Taycan coming around the corner as early as next year, Porsche will be expanding its electric lineup and that means an electric crossover.
With the 2020 Porsche Taycan on the way with production officially starting next year, Porsche is firing its first salvo into a brave new world of electrification. Naturally, car journalists were curious about the future of Porsche’s electrification plans and with the writing already on the wall, we have an answer. As per AutoCar.UK on their exclusive off-the-cuff interview with Porsche Finance Director Luz Meschke they posted up earlier this week (Oct. 15, 2018) Porsche will definitely drop an electric crossover by 2022. So, that means we’re going to hear about this electric crossover by 2021.

Almost every car manufacturer is, at the moment, implementing its plan for electrification and hybridization and already has at least one bespoke model that’s a crossover with some electric power. Jaguar has its i-Pace, Tesla, of course, has its Model X, and even Ford is actively developing a plug-in Hybrid Ford F-150 in a chassis that is arguably the antithesis of the electric car movement.
The electric crossover is the epitome of the sign of the times. Almost everyone agrees that fossil fuels are finite and the car market addresses this with its current offerings, moving towards smaller FI engines and hybridization of some sort.
As per AutoCar, Mesche’s exact words were…
“You can expect a SUV BEV by 2022 at the latest.”
And it goes even further, Mescke hinted that Porsche was working on a “Big SUV.” So, naturally, that rules out the Porsche Macan and leaves us with the possibility of a Porsche Cayenne E.
2022 is a long way from now as far as electric technology goes, a good three years of R&D. Battery and motor technology, in that time, will take another leap forward in performance and range and R&D will adapt on the fly.
As it stands, the Taycan boasts 600 equivalent HP and 310 miles of range. Porsche also is readying its own fast-chargers in conjunction with a current VW Group initiative dubbed “Electrify America” that will see Porsche installing 2000 AC charging points all across the country.
Porsche is invested in an electric lineup, it’s not a matter of if but when.
