Ford is extending production of its ultra-exclusive Ford GT supercar by another two years and only 350 of the world’s top influencers will probably get it.

Ford is doing the supercar world a favor by opening its order books for a second time in order to get a couple hundred more Ford GT’s made while maintaining exclusivity. According to our friends over at Automotive News on their report on Ford’s gracious GT team they put out earlier this week (Oct. 18,2018), there’s still a bit of money to be made with the Ford GT program without sullying the storied domestic supercar name, maintaining its cache.

Back when the program was announced in 2016, they stated only 1,000 would be made eliciting a rush of orders that outstripped demand by six to one. That means over 5,000 well-to-do applicants who had the coin to drop on the Ford GT didn’t get one. Even with an extra 350 GTs, that will still leave thousands of unsatisfied applicants which is nothing new in the world of supercar exclusivity.

Currently, Ford’s GT factory in Ontario, Canada is producing these cars at a snail’s pace of barely one per working day just touching Ford’s goal of 250 a year. Technically, even if Ford wanted to extend twice as many Ford GT’s two prospective owners, which would, in my opinion, maintain exclusivity, they would have to somehow scale up production to the detriment of this very niche automobile.

Unlike other supercars like the much more affordable (and available) Acura NSX, the Ford GT, for all intents and purposes, is a bespoke racecar with a regular paint job. Car magazine reports that,

The basic structure is the same, and about 70 per cent of the shape, along with the crash structure and many other elements,’ Howard-Chappell explains. ‘The engine is a V6 turbo from the same family, but a slightly different one from the road car, allowed by the regulations.’

Ford will reopen order books for this super-exclusive wonder car later this year on Nov. 8. Keep in mind that if you order now, you won’t get your car by at least later in 2020 as 2019 production wraps up the original 1,000 orders.
