All rivals to Tesla, until this point, have been one-off luxury boutique manufacturer offerings that didn’t really speak to potential middle class shoppers looking for a Tesla alternative.

This is Ford, the unofficial transportation spokesperson of Blue Collar America, and now they have an offering for the electric car market. This is a game changer.

Choosing the Ford Mustang as its design inspiration is a brilliant move since it ties into the performance and heritage that brought Ford performance to the masses at an unprecedented level.

Most people turn their noses up at Tesla owners when they’re being overtaken, but price aside, this is a Ford, the socially acceptable electric car offering. You’ll spend as much as if you financed a Tesla but that blue oval will buy you some “that’s a good ol’ American product” cred, something that Silicon Valley Tesla could never pull off.

The exterior styling pulls off the Mustang design language well, showing off its muscle car DNA, now in crossover form. There’s no mistaking this is a Ford product.

Inside, it’s clean and minimalistic with a large Tesla-like front infotainment system taking up most of the middle front console. Presumably, most controls are now accessed through that giant touch screen.

Performance should be on-par, if not better than Tesla. No word on who’ll be supplying batteries, how much kWh they hold, or who made the electric motors, but as this is a Ford product, the company that literally invented mass production, I dare say quality across all measurable areas will be better than Tesla.

If you can pre-order one, when the time comes, do it. This is a pioneering electric car, one that’ll give Tesla a run for its money.
