You’d think these city leaders would set an example by walking but a nearby convertible and sunny weather meant a top-down crossing intead.

An amusing tidbit to a larger story came across my newsfeed earlier this week. According to KSN.com, the city of Haysville in Sedgewick County, Kansas cut the ribbon on the Tim Norton Pedestrian Bridge, a much needed public works project that connected two cities, making it safer for people to cross from Haysville into greater Wichita.

The ceremony itself was rather nice, according to a video I saw, lasting 15 minutes. There were a handful of speeches and a lovely ribbon cutting, but when it came time to cross and make it official keen eyes noticed something big, red, and motorized on the pedestrian bridge, a Lexus convertible.

A car crossing a pedestrian bridge? Pedestrian…

Yah, I thought it was interesting, odd, and worthy of a few words.

Check out the bridge crossing in what looks like a Lexus IS250 Convertible starting at 14 minutes in the video below.

As you can see in the below photos, these are all able bodied men standing tall, proud, and with top-notch tickers. A little walking? I’m sure all were up to the task.

The bridge is only 907 feet long. If you walk across and back that’s a whopping 552 meters or one lap around your city’s track and then some.

Oh, the rigors of walking a lap and a little more.

I mean, they had a 50 piece elementary school marching band walking behind the car, briskly walking and playing the Colonel Bogey March, the iconic whistling song from the Bridge on the River Kwai. If a 13-year-old can lug a tuba over 500 meters, ya’ll can walk and wave at the same time.

I’m sure they all broke some law state law that prohibits cars driving on public walkways, too.

It’s a pedestrian bridge, people. Don’t drive on it.
