Here’s the list of aftermarket Catalytic converters for the Toyota Prius that are also CARB compliant

Regardless if your Toyota Prius’s catalytic converter was stolen or, for some reason, needed replacing, your only option for an exhaust pipe with dual catalytic converters that was also California grade CARB compliant was an OEM Toyota part. With catalytic converter thieves driving up the demand for replacement OEM Toyota Catalytic converters, and with no aftermarket options, Toyota could not keep up with demand and Prius owners had to wait.

That’s no longer the case as according to a recent CARB executive order published in April, California-based Car Sound Exhaust System, better known as MagnaFlow, is one of the first (and currently the only) aftermarket exhaust company manufacturing and selling California Grade CARB Compliant Catalytic converters for all model years of the Toyota Prius, Prius C, Prius V, Prius Plug-in, and Lexus CT200H that are not smog-exempt.

*I’ll update this list accordingly as new aftermarket catalytic converters for the Prius roll out.

According to EO D-193-151, Magnaflow has successfully proved their cats for the Toyota Prius pass California’s standards and can legally sell both direct fit and universal catalytic converters for the following Toyota and Lexus.

  • 2014-2016+ Toyota Prius
  • 2012-2016+ Toyota Prius C
  • 2013-2015 Toyota Prius V
  • 2012-2015+ Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid
  • 2013-2015 Lexus CT200H

A direct-fit replacement, like this Magnaflow 2004 Toyota Prius California Grade CARB Compliant Direct-Fit catalytic converter, means you don’t need to cut or weld, simply unbolt the old exhaust pipe and install this one.

A universal replacement, like this MagnaFlow California Grade CARB Compliant Universal Catalytic Converter means if thieves only stole the front or rear catalytic converter, you don’t have to buy the whole unit and can weld this one on.

Unlike Toyota’s 1-year warranty, Magnaflow cats carry a Limited 5 year/50,000 mile construction and emissions warranty. Magnaflow is also made in California U.S.A.

Can I install a cheaper Federal grade, 49-state Catalytic converter?

It’s illegal to sell federal grade, 49-state catalytic converters to California residents. However, California residents still manage to sneak them in by other means, installing them to get by between smogs.

Toyota Prius members on PriusChat.com report that these cheaper catalytic converters often set off the check engine light on their Toyota Priuses. A check engine light will automatically fail you on your biennial smog. Regardless, without a CARB approved EO plate affixed on the exhaust pipe, that too is grounds for failure.

If you’re a California Toyota Prius owner, save yourself the hassle, keep legal, and buy a California Grade, CARB Approved Catalytic converter from the list above.
