A KIA Stinger owner is happy that a local had their dashcam running now that the red light runner claims they’re not at fault.
Presumed Loganville resident and Redditor /u/BigSwede0621 posted up dashcam footage earlier yesterday (Dec. 28, 2023) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing the unexpected moment a driver in a blue Saturn Vue ran a red light a good four seconds after the light changed and slammed into a KIA Stinger.
/u/BigSwede0621’s Reddit thread is linked here, with the dashcam video embedded below.
The incident happened at the intersection of Logan Dr. and Athens Highway (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s dashcam footage shows, he begins to make a left turn, the green arrow indicating it’s a protected turn.
As this Google Maps camera view shows, drivers in opposing traffic also have a protected left turn.
I counted a good four Mississippis after their light turns from red to green when we see a blue Saturn Vue travelling on Athens Highway, not slow and continue through the intersection.
A Kia Stinger edges out into traffic, sees the approaching Vue, and tries to dodge it to avoid getting hit, but’s it’s too little too late.
The Vue hits the Stinger’s driver fender pretty hard, probably seriously tweaking the suspension, too.
OP admits he didn’t stick around, judging the severity of the crash.
“I would have stopped, but it was fairly low speed. I called the local PD and told them I had it”
You’d think this kind of fender bender would be cut and dry, even without the dashcam footage, but not so, as the driver in the Blue Vue ends up not taking responsibility for the accident.
“(The) footage is in the hands of the investigating officer. Sounds like red light runner was lying.”
At least a handful of comments predicted just that.
“Saturn Vue driver will say the Stinger ran the red light in front of him, and if there’s no video evidence or witness testimony otherwise, the insurance companies will likely use that as an excuse to reduce payouts. Stinger driver is screwed unless they’ve got witnesses to back them up, or video evidence of what actually happened,” /u/noncongruent commented.
“Proving what the traffic signal was doing at the point of the accident is the hardest part of an insurance investigation. Each person is going to say something different,” /u/RickWest495 replies, pointing out the harsh reality of these kinds of accidents.
It’s unfortunate yet the truth about the world today that most people will lie instead of telling the truth, especially when potentially thousands of dollars in damage is on the line.
This red light runner incident is just another data point to do two things to protect yourself; to drive defensively at all times, and to get yourself a dashcam ASAP.
I have videos at exact same intersection of three cars running light a full 3-4 seconds after light changed. Just a few weeks ago. I had already moved into the highway to make a left turn (left from Home Depot) and the third car nearly hit me. And it seems police do not even go after these types!
I got a 2 way cam after being rear-ended twice in 1 day. 1st driver claimed I stopped on Ponce de Leon & backed into his car & since I didn’t get a police report, it was his word against mine. I got a settlement but it would’ve been higher with a police report. 2nd driver left the scene. I work remotely now.
You got a settlement? You POS your just as bad as the person who lied ! Your type makes people want to vomit ????.. it’s all about how much money you can get out of a fender bender ???? sad POS humans we have here in Loganville and beyond.. Get a life!
