A driver in a truck really tried to exit off I-65 using an on-ramp when the next exit us less than half a mile away.
Presumed Louisville resident and Redditor /u/SlappyMeal shared head-shaking dashcam footage from earlier in October (Oct 17, 2024) from KY-61 to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver in a black Ram 1500 using an I-65 on-ramp as an off-ramp.
Check out his harebrained move below with his original post on Reddit linked here.
As mentioned, the incident happened on this I-65 on-ramp in the 1700 block of KY-61 (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As his dashcam footage shows, OP makes a right turn from E Lee St. onto KY-61 and prepares to merge onto I-65 using the nearby on-ramp.
Stopped near the on-ramp entrance is a driver in a black Ram 1500 off of I-65 signaling right.
The Ram 1500 driver is essentially attempting to drive against traffic with the right of way, using an on-ramp as an off-ramp.
A quick search on Maps reveals the next exit is less than half a mile away.
OP just about broadsides the Ram 1500 but swerves out of the way at the last second.
Both come to a stop before going their respective ways, the Ram 1500 onto KY-61, and OP finishing merging.
Redditors called out OP for what they considered to be a rash move.
“The guy in the truck was an idiot, but he had his turn signal on so it was pretty obvious what he was trying to do. It almost looks like OP was trying to ram them. Either that or they just weren’t paying attention to what was going on directly in front of them until nearly colliding into it,” /u/Sketch2029 commented.
“So what if truck had his signal on; it was still illegal and way more dangerous than anything I did. The truck had his hazards on when I got to the stop sign. By the time the car to my left cleared he turned them off. Look at the ramp on a map and you will find it is a VERY short on ramp. I glanced let to get a feel for traffic and looked back right to the truck making an illegal move to exit across an on-ramp. The truck should have gone to the next exit and rerouted. I avoided the accident and went on with my day,” /u/SlappyMeal replied.
“The truck driver was both stupid and dangerous, but you were also dangerous. You almost caused an accident by not looking forward,” /u/scarmbles57 summed it up.
While the Ram 1500 driver was clearly in the wrong, I think OP could’ve handled his reaction a little bit more defensively.
Regardless, risking using an on-ramp like that is just pure laziness, considering the next exact was so close.
