A speeder decided to go against traffic and overtake across double yellow lines to end up not saving much time, at all.
M-60 commuter and Redditor /u/lametec posted up headshaking dashcam footage from Homer from earlier last year (Sept 12, 2023) showing an impatient speeder going against traffic and overtaking on double yellow lines just as one lane diverged into two.
Check out their dashcam video below, original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident happened on the 25000 block of E Leigh St after the transition from M-60 and just before the bridge over the Kalamazoo River (Exact location on Google maps linked here.)
As OP’s dashcam video shows, he’s traveling along and into E. Leigh St just before the single-lane road splits into two lanes.
The speed limit for M-60 entering Homer is 45 MPH.
Suddenly, a white GMC Acadia SUV driver goes over the double solid yellow lines and against traffic to pass OP at speeds that look much faster than 45 MPH.
A vehicle can be seen approaching, headed straight for the Acadia, however, there’s considerable distance between them.
OP honks his horn, letting the bonehead driver know how bad a move they just pulled.
You can estimate how far ahead their “time-saving’ maneuver netted them which amounts to less than half a block.
In Michigan, improper passing and driving on the wrong side of the road are civil infractions, subject to a total fine of around $120 for each.
“He’s passive-aggressively telling you that the extra lane is for you,” /u/MisawaAB commented.
“I was really hoping the video ended with OP pulling up next to them at a red light,” /u/PumpkinArt hoped.
“There’s also a passing zone just before the second lane shows up. The other driver just wanted to be a bad a**,” /u/Unknowingly-Joined pointed out.
As demonstrated, so-called time-saving maneuvers don’t end up saving much time, at all.
However, they increase the risks of getting into an accident, roping in others, or worse
The potential for such situations to go south, quickly, will never outweigh the “time saved.”
