This hare-brained move saved the driver an additional 4 miles of driving.

Colorado commuter and Redditor /u/dangermouse-87 shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier last year (May 11, 2024) from Wheat Ridge showing a reckless pickup truck driver towing a trailer with a heavy load decide to use the middle of an I-70 onramp to bust a u-turn, right over a concrete median no less.

Check out OP’s dashcam video below, original Reddit thread linked here.

As mentioned, the incident happened at the intersection of W 44th Ave and the I-70 on-ramp in Wheat Ridge, CO (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As OP’s dashcam footage shows, he begins his turn from W 44th Ave, following a pickup truck driver towing a trailer with a heavy load.

OP mentions he, too, is towing a trailer.

Suddenly, the pickup truck driver in front of him brakes and busts a U-turn over the concrete median headed back toward 44th Ave.

The load on his trailer can be seen violently shifting around.

To be clear, this is an illegal maneuver.

To prevent an imminent collision, OP’s emergency brakes kick in.

“The first time the emergency braking alerts kicked in for me, I was towing a trailer too, he literally hung out his window and put his arms up like “what’s the problem?”

Had that pickup truck driver wanted to re-route the right way, he would’ve merged onto I-70 and taken the nearest exit a mile away.

The total distance to re-route would’ve been about four miles or another 8 minutes if Google Maps is to be believed.

The route this pickup truck driver would take to re-route from that on-ramp. It’s about four miles

In Colorado, an illegal U-turn is subject to a fine of up to $100 before fees and 3 points on your driving record.

“Motorists can also expect their auto insurance premiums to go up since making an unsafe U-turn is a moving violation.”

“Bad driving aside, those cargo straps are doing some work. Was expecting the load to tip over but they held,” /u/Chaosmusic humorously pointed out.

He was intending to go eastbound and went to the wrong intersection. Exit 267 is literally a mile down the road, he could have turned around there. Hotshots aren’t the smartest,” /u/aghostofrazgriz reiterated.

“Hey, at least everyone making the left from those two turn lanes stayed in their lane. That’s unusual for this sub,” /u/tippiedog also pointed out.

Unfortunately, without being caught and with no consequences, this type of driving behavior will go unabated.

We can only hope the proper authorities observe his hare-brained driving sooner rather than later.
