Illegality aside, lane splitting in a motorcycle is one thing, but doing it in a car is plain asinine.
Colorado Springs commuter and Redditor /u/Pitbull_lover2001 shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier this February (Feb 6, 2025) from I-25 showing an idiot driver in their Honda Civic dangerously lane splitting between two vehicles.
Check out OP’s dashcam footage below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The incident happened on I-25 in Colorado Springs just before Exit 138 onto Lake Ave and Circle Dr (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s dashcam video shows, they’re driving along I-25.
Up front, a driver in a white Mazda SUV slowly passes a Tesla Model X.
In other words, the driver in the Mazda is doing what they’re supposed to do, pass in the passing lane.
Suddenly, a driver in a Honda Civic hatchback comes flying behind and lane splits between the Mazda and Tesla.
Either the Tesla driver or its Auto Pilot function intervenes and moves to the side to avoid a sideswipe accident.
“What a f***ing idiot,” we hear someone in OP’s car exclaim.
Lane splitting and unsafe lane changes like this are of course illegal in Colorado.
Violators of either are subject to a base fine of $100.
Improper passing also gets you four points on your driving record.
This can also arguably be plain ol’ reckless driving.
Fines for reckless driving range between $300 and jail time up to six months for repeat offenders.
“Nice spatial awareness from the two cars on either side of the idiot, though.,” /u/Bellumbern pointed out.
“I always am curious as to what idiots like this are thinking when they lane split in cars…it probably won’t make sense, but I’m still curious,” /u/StackThePads33 wondered.
“They call it “Swimming” or sometimes “swimming through traffic”. It got big during COVID in busy cities like New York and Chicago and is now starting to spread to other cities,” /u/Slimy_Shar*_Socket explained.
Reckless driving like this is never worth it but always increases the likelihood of you getting into an accident or worse, roping in innocent drivers too.
Reckless driving catching up to you is not a matter of if, but when.
