This idiot’s costly mistake likely totaled his car and caused over $11,000 of damage to the dashcam owner’s vehicle, too.

Millcreek commuter and Redditor /u/CherryColaHolic shared headshaking rear dashcam footage from earlier in May (May 6, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing an idiot driver not paying attention slam into the bright blue tailgate of OP’s truck as OP slowed down for a turner in front of him.

Check out the dashcam footage embedded below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened in the 900 block of 3300 S, just after the intersection with 900 EA (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As OP’s dashcam footage shows, they’re driving down 3300 S.

A driver in a white Toyota RAV-4 can be seen following OP at a reasonable distance behind.

OP then begins to slow because a car in front of him turns into a parking lot, a normal occurrence out on the road.

The driver in the Toyota RAV-4 clearly was not paying attention as they slammed into the rear of OP’s truck at full speed.

Well, they slammed into OP’s truck’s rear hitch first.

“My hitch definitely took the brunt of it. And this is why I always have a hitch in. But he still got up into my bumper and the bottom of the bedside. After the cop did her thing, I finished my errands, and he waited for a tow truck.”

It’s a pretty open and shut case for police and the insurance, as mentioned, the driver in the RAV-4 admitted to being distracted.

“He admitted to the cop (and even to his insurance) that he wasn’t paying attention.”

OP doesn’t know how much the other driver’s repairs cost, although it’s likely totaled, but he does share, despite his hitch taking the brunt of the damage to his truck, the other driver’s insurance will have to shell out $11,000+ to bring his truck back to its former state.

“(The other driver was) either staring at the phone or playing with their radio. completely clueless to their surroundings,” the top comment from /u/AliveInCLE reads.

“Utah seems over-represented in this sub,” /u/Cerus_Freedom points out.

“It’s scary how often I look towards another car around me while out delivering and see the driver on the phone. Just idiocy everywhere nowadays,” /u/OpticalPrime35 added.

“Tell me about it! This sub is the entire reason I got my dashcam a few years ago,” OP replied to the comment above.

Paying attention at all times is not a suggestion but mandatory when you’re behind the wheel.

Even the slightest lapse can have expensive and day/week/year/life running consequences.

Thankfully, there was only vehicle damage in this case.

Slightly different circumstances, and it could’ve ended a whole lot worse.
