Fuel tanker drives into the gore point, merging too early and almost causing a sidewipe accident.
Illinois commuter and Redditor /u/CesarJay shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier in July (July 3, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a clueless driver in a diesel tanker from the Al Warren Oil Company cutting in too early from an on-ramp, mixing with off-ramp traffic, almost sideswiping a dashcam owner as a result.
Check out the dashcam video below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
The near crash happened on the Stevenson Expressway as traffic exiting off of Exit 288 towards Kedzie Ave mixes with on-ramp traffic from S California Ave (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As the dashcam shows, OP is exiting off the Stevenson on Exit 88.
As the video shows, this particular off-ramp shares an on-ramp with other traffic trying to merge onto the Stevenson.
As such, traffic in either lane must merge with each other, safely.
Drivers entering the freeway (on-ramp) and those exiting (off-ramp) should cooperate and take turns merging. It’s not legally defined who must yield, but mutual awareness is expected.
Above all else, you can’t change lanes when it’s not safe.
This driver in a diesel tanker can be seen crossing over a solid white line over a gore point, in clear violation of the rules of the road.
OP honks his horn to get the truck driver’s attention, but at that point, OP is almost squeezed into the side of the freeway.
Thankfully, he manages to maneuver out of the near-miss unscathed.
“In basically a big rolling bomb too wtf,” one of the top comments from /u/warrybuffalo reads.
“You have to love the flashing light on the back for safety,” /u/Spirited_Refuse9265 humorously added.
As suggested by others on the Reddit thread, OP made sure the fuel tanker company employing the driver in the US Department of Transportation was aware of the near accident.
“Contacted the trucking company, was contacted by the trailer company, and they were apologetic about the incident. I just wanted them to know what happened as it shook me up at the moment, and they said they’ll take care of it. I also filed a complaint with the USDOT per some comments, just in case…”
Other Redditors made sure their Google Review page got some choice reviews, too.
CDL drivers, just like ordinary Class C drivers in Illinois, are subject to fines, points, and additional penalties for unsafe lane changes like this.
Violators are typically hit with a fine of up to $150 before all the fees and 20 points on their driving record.
