The passing lane was blocked by a lane hog who refused to move, so they took matters into their own hands.
El Paso County commuter and Redditor /u/Commercial_Ads shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier in July (July 15, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver illegally resorting to passing on the shoulder because drivers were hogging the passing lane for no apparent reason.
Despite the illegality, some commenters are saying, “You know what? I get it.”

The incident occurred on State Highway 21, also known as S Powers Blvd, in Security-Widefield, just after the intersection with Fontaine Blvd (Exact location on Google Maps linked here).
As the dashcam footage begins, a driver in a silver Hyundai Tucson passes OP in the left lane on their way to, hopefully, continue to pass and overtake slower traffic because, well, they’re in the passing lane.
The passing lane, however, is being blocked by a driver who refuses to speed up past the driver directly next to them.
With the other driver next to them, they’ve essentially made a rolling blockade, boxing out any driver from passing.
Yes, CO has a keep right law with violators subject to a base fine of $42.20 and at least 2 points out of a possible 3 on your driving record.
The driver in the Tucson rolls behind the other driver in the left lane to encourage them to move past the lane hogs, but it’s no use; they don’t move either.
Taking matters into their own hands, the driver in the Tucson actually signals her intention to use the emergency shoulder and passes in the breakdown lane.
That’s against CO’s vehicle code too, §42‑4‑1007 specifically.
““Under no condition shall an attempt be made to pass upon the shoulder or any portion of the roadway remaining to the right of the indicated right‑hand traffic lane.”
Breaking the above nets violators a Class A Traffic Infraction, also punishable by fines and points.
Despite the move’s illegality, other Redditors empathized with the passer’s plight.
“The 2 people blocking traffic were idiots, too. I’m all for driving safe and going only 5 over the limit max, but pissing speeders off to force your agenda on them is just stupid. Once they are in front of you, they aren’t your problem anymore,” one of the top comments from MMOAddict reads.
“I don’t condone this move, but I get it,” /u/OhioSuesEveryone added.
“Agreed. Shoulder-passing is never warranted in 99.99% of videos I see on here. This is the 00.01% when it is. These left lane campers were maintaining speed with the right lane vehicle. Either speed up or f***ing MOVE,” /u/SVU_Fan replied.
