A case of convenient cop, along with dashcam video, might’ve saved this SUV owner from a case of he said, she said with their insurance.

Seattlite and Redditor /u/IvanRomanAround shared a case of a police officer being in the right place at the right time from earlier last week (July 25, 2025) to the /r/ConvenientCop subreddit showing a driver in a Lexus Hatchback botch a U-turn on Northgate Way and ultimately ending up backing into the rear of an SUV behind them.

Thankfully, a cop was facing the opposite direction and saw the whole thing.

Check out their dashcam footage below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened near the intersection of NE Northgate Way and 3rd Ave (Exact location on Google Maps linked here, and a bird’s eye view posted below.)

Where the car in question started their U-turn is shown by the red star.

As the dashcam video shows, OP is behind a driver in a large GMC Yukon SUV, who is behind a driver in a Lexus CT200H.

The way the street is laid out, a U-turn attempt here is difficult.

While there are no signs preventing anyone from attempting a U-turn, as others mentioned in the comments, it would behoove someone to drive a little further up towards 3rd Ave to do so.

Regardless, the driver in the Lexus attempts a U-turn, doesn’t have space, and tries to make his 3-point U-turn work.

Flustered, perhaps by the observing officer, and not paying attention, they backed into the driver in the Yukon, following close behind.

Seeing it all play out, Seattle PD turns on their blues and reds and follows the two parties to presumably provide some assistance and get them to pull over safely to exchange information.

“LOL, I like how the SUV owner says f*** that and goes after the person,” /u/st3sayasit commented.

“That was a weird u-turn attempt anyway, as the larger SUV proved, it was never necessary to re-enter the other lane again,” /u/chemicaljones pointed out.

As it pertains to their U-turn, the driver in the Lexus didn’t do it safely and interfered with traffic doing so, both prerequisites to not breaking RCW 46.61.295, which defines how U-turns are handled in Washington.

(1) The driver of any vehicle shall not turn such vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite direction unless such movement can be made in safety and without interfering with other traffic.

In WA, drivers who make improper turns like this are subject to a traffic infraction, which usually carries a fine of about $124 before all the fees.

In this situation, thankfully, the driver in the GMC Yukon will have the benefit of a dashcam video and an observing officer.

This could’ve easily become an insurance headache of he said, she said.
