This stop sign runner lied to his insurance company, but he found out that they know he’s one big fat liar.
King County commuter and Redditor /u/Rambling_Engineer shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier in October (Oct 5, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a stop sign runner t-boning him on NE 175th St, only to find out despite admitting fault, that’s not what he told his insurance.
Little did that liar know, /u/Rambling_Engineer exonerated himself thanks to his dashcam vid.
Check out how it all went down embedded below with the original Reddit thread linked here.
As mentioned, the incident happened at the intersection of NE 175th St. and 8th Ave just before the Buddha Jewel Monastery (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)
As OP’s dashcam shows, he’s gingerly driving down 175th St., going the normal speed limit when he approaches the aforementioned intersection.
A retaining wall, as seen below, first from 175th and then from 8th Ave, obscures drivers from seeing incoming cross traffic from either street.

As such, traffic with the stop sign on 8th Ave should use a peep-and-creep method of crossing, or creeping up slowly and beyond the stop sign to get a better view of approaching traffic.
As OP approaches, a driver in a white Heavy Duty Ford Truck on 8th approaches and rolls through the stop sign without stopping, broadsiding OP in the process.
OP does his best to swerve out of the way but still gets hit pretty hard.
Thankfully, OP commented that no one, himself included, was seriously injured.
As such, police did not show to further document the incident.
At first, the other driver admitted fault in front of OP.
“He took the fault at the scene…,” OP explained.
However, such was not the case with his insurance.
As OP soon found out, the other driver essentially lied to his insurance, explaining he wasn’t at fault at all, that is, before knowing a dashcam video existed.
“(He) lied to his insurance about what happened. His insurance had a laugh once they saw this (the dash cam.) Just happy no one was hurt and that* my car is still drivable while I wait for repairs.”
“…his insurance wouldn’t take liability till they saw the video, as Washington is a “no-fault state”. It was essentially my word vs his since the police refused to show. Once they saw the video, they claimed fault and are handling all the financial responsibilities. It took a lot of phone calls to finally get to that point. Super frustrating.”
In Washington, running a stop sign carries a base fine of about $48, with an additional $73 if an accident occurs, and typically adds 2–3 points to your driving record. If the crash involves injury or major damage, it can escalate to a misdemeanor with higher fines, possible jail time, and license suspension, while also potentially increasing insurance costs.
There are plenty of good dashcam brands out there, like Vantrue, Viofo, RedTiger, and Garmin, all with several offerings designed to fit any budget, many coming in under $100.
As someone who just installed one, I can confirm they’re super simple to install and provide a layer of protection to bolster your car insurance claims should a need arise.
