Despite them being 100% in the wrong, the new teen driver STILL didn’t understand why what he did was wrong to begin with.

Lincoln-area driver and Redditor /u/Banter1989 shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier towards the end of last year (Dec 28, 2025) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a new teen driver not understanding how unprotected turn arrows work, resulting in him clipping the vehicle of a dashcam owner and trying to turn it into a hit-and-run before eventually stopping.

Check out the dashcam video below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened at the intersection of N 70th St. and Avelock Ave. in Lincoln (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam shows, OP is driving along N 70th St. around 8 PM when he approaches the aforementioned intersection.

OP has the green light, and so does turning traffic with their own unprotected green arrow.

As a refresher, turners with an unprotected green arrow must first yield to traffic going straight with the right of way before entering the intersection, something one particular teen driver in a Jeep Compass didn’t know.

We see said Jeep Compass approach the intersection from the other side and turn while OP is still going straight.

The Compass clips OP’s front bumper and, instead of pulling over, books it.

They didn’t get far.

“Driver of the jeep compass eventually stopped 4 blocks later after much honking and flashing of brights. Legitimately looked 11 years old; my second sentence to him was “How old are you?” to which he said “I swear I’m 16 I know I look young bro.”

First question was “What were you doing?” To which he said, “I had the green light.” I countered with “but so did I, and yours was not a protected green left turn arrow.” He countered with “but it was green though.”

The kid’s Dad eventually showed up, was quite irate at his son, but there’s one small plot twist that might make you chuckle.

“The kid’s dad who showed up to find the insurance info for him, and the kid was the only one who still didn’t get why he was wrong.”

“After everything was handled, Dad follows Junior and is honking like crazy trying to get the kid to turn his headlights back on, because he was driving away from an accident he caused right in front of a cop pitch black night with the headlights off for at least a couple blocks. So yeah, maybe not ready to be given the responsibility of driving quite yet.”

“As a bonus, daddy was all cool in front of the cop, but after I got home, it was just texts begging me not file with insurance, and they’re totally good for the damages, bro, trust me. Didn’t bother replying until I had already filed with their insurance.”

In Nebraska, drivers turning on a green indication (even without a protected arrow) must still yield the right-of-way to other traffic and pedestrians legally in the intersection before completing a turn. (FindLaw Codes)

According to Nebraska’s point system, leaving the scene of an accident (hit-and-run) carries 6 points on your driving record, and failure to stop and report after an accident with property damage also carries 6 points. (DMV.ORG)

If convicted of these and other moving violations (like failing to yield), accumulating enough points can lead to license suspension under the Nebraska DMV point system. (Nebraska DMV)
