A dashcam owner was likely saved by a combination of honking and their vehicle warning them of their impending crash.

I-5 commuter and Redditor /u/VeryNiceMonkey shared headshaking dashcam footage from earlier in February (Feb 14, 2026) to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing a driver merging onto the Pacific Highway, with their head in the clouds, not looking, and almost crashing into the side of this dashcam owner.

Check out the dashcam footage embedded below with the original Reddit thread linked here.

The incident happened on I-5 just before Exit 123 towards Umpqua Park (exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

As the dashcam shows, OP is headed northbound on I-5 when they come to the end of the Frontage Rd. onramp.

Seeing traffic merging from said road, OP changes onto Lane #1.

A driver in a blacked-out Toyota Tundra, with all tinted windows, merges onto I-5, signals, and drifts towards OP.

With a median to their left, OP doesn’t have an emergency lane to hop onto, so OP gives the Tundra driver a generous honk, letting them know they’re about to crash.

Perhaps it was the honk, the Tundra’s driving assist, or a combination of both, but the Tundra quickly veers away into its own lane, avoiding a crash.

Thankfully, that’s where the incident ends.

“I think the blind spot monitoring system in their car might have saved you. This idiot did not look, and I think the only reason he stopped is because the car warned him lol.” the top comment from /u/Msuk0 reads.

“The people who think they need to get in the left lane within four seconds of getting on the freeway no matter what are the worst,” /u/mfk_1974 added.

In Oregon, failing to properly yield when merging (e.g., almost causing a crash) is typically cited under “Failure to Yield Right of Way” (ORS 811.275 or related sections). The base fine is usually around $265 (can vary by court), and it carries 3 DMV demerit points on your driving record. If it results in a crash or is deemed careless driving, penalties and fines can be higher.
