I guess Car and Driver got their hands on a ZR1 and I guess they took it down to Texas to lay the hammer down.

The ZR1 isn’t even for sale yet but it looks like it’s already setting big speed numbers. According to The Texas Mile off their Facebook page reporting on a couple of runs during their mile event this weekend, it looks like Car and Driver snuck in a totally stock 2019 Corvette ZR1 and managed to do at least two runs. The first run got the ZR1 up to 189 MPH while the second run had the ZR1 going just 1 MPH more hitting a final mile top speed of 190.1 MPH. Check out the run for yourself below.

Comparatively, this ZR1 doesn’t even compare to the top-tier vehicles at the event and the runs they were putting down. The best cars were hitting 250+ MPH, no problem. But then again, those other cars weren’t exactly production cars.

People commenting on the video fail to realize that important fact.

According to some people at the event and just by looking at the ZR1 that Car and Driver brought, there are some not-so-subtle changes that C&D did. Most notably, Car and Driver literally unscrewed the rear wing as well as the front canards. The ZR1 wasn’t particularly made for top speed as it is a downforce monster right out of the box. By removing the rear wing and canards, presumably, there’s less downforce which will allow the ZR1 to accelerate harder in the top end.

Around a track, removing the downforce aides would most likely make the ZR1 slower, time-wise. But, in a straight line where top speed is king, you’re going to hurt your top end performance at the cost of more stability.

The tale of the tape has the ZR1 at 755 HP and 715 lb-ft from its 5.2L supercharged LT5. With a larger supercharger, and more importantly, a more efficient cooling system, the ZR1 can probably hit those Texas Mile numbers again and again.

For those other mile-speed queens, the same can’t be said.
