This Tesla Model X owner shows his Tesla steering into a barrier.

Tesla calls its suite of Autopilot features “drivers assistance” yet people still use it without paying full attention to the road. This video should change all that. But probably not. Watch it anyways. According to Tesla Model X owner who goes by BeastPilot on Reddit earlier yesterday (Apr. 6,2018) his Tesla Model X literally steered into the path of a crash barrier dividing the freeway. Although the crash barrier is designed to take a hit, going at his indicated 60 MPH, things could’ve seriously turned out far worse if he didn’t steer out of the way. Check out the video below for yourself.

Autopilot Barrier Lust (2018.12) from r/teslamotors

In the thread appropriately titled, “AutoPilot Barrier lust.” Beastpilot is driving his Tesla Model X at an appropriate 60 MPH on the freeway. To his left is a separate entrance to a carpool or hot lane being built but it’s currently closed off.

The problem is that the lane divider in the middle disappears and subsequently the lane markings for what was once the far left lane. Tesla’s lane assist does its best to interpret the far left lane of the new carpool lane and the far right lane of the previous far left lane as one big lane and centers itself in the middle.

If Beastpilot didn’t correct his Tesla Model X manually, he would’ve plowed into the barrier and most likely would’ve been injured. Fortunately for him, he takes control, like you should, and avoids the barrier entirely.

Presumably, a warning comes up when you enable autopilot that you should pay attention and it even says in the manual that you should,

Never depend on components to keep you safe. It is the driver’s responsibility to stay alert, drive safely, and be in control of the vehicle at all times.

Nevertheless, you can bet on it that people on Instagram, Facebook live, and Snapchat will STILL show themselves showing off that they’re not driving and doing something else entirely.

Just a couple of days ago I featured this bonehead Youtuber using Honda Sense from the passenger seat. Don’t do that!

So the next time you see your friend’s flexing on social media with Autopilot, not paying attention, show them this article.
