The UK government is calling these new green license plates a badge of honor. Here’s why this idea needs to come to the United States, like, yesterday.

The UK will host the Zero Emission Vehicle summit starting tomorrow and they’re ready to bring a plethora of ideas to promote and accelerate the growth of EVs and low emissions vehicles. As per the UK Government on a blog post published earlier yesterday (Sept. 9,2018) one of those initiatives includes making license plates (or number plates)  green, either the numbers or the plate background, indicating the car it’s attached to is an EV or low emission vehicle. While EVs and low emission vehicles get special decals in the United States, here’s why this idea to make license plates green, needs to jump across the pond ASAP.

After a brief google search, it looks like EVs in the UK don’t even get decals like we do. Passerbys not in the know have no way of knowing what you’re driving is saving the environment. Then again, most of their hottest sellers are hatches with tiny engines that get phenomenal gas mileage, anyways. Allowing EVs and hybrids to advertise to the rest of the motoring world that they’re saving the environment is frankly a big reason some people choose EVs in the first place. EVs are a great conversation starter and are great for people’s egos. The ability to charge at home and skip the pump is merely a benefit.

And there is no other place in the world that would benefit from such an initiative like the United States. Our EVs only get these decals, which take away from the aesthetic, being tiny bumper stickers (decals,) which tell police and cameras that we can use carpool lanes and all but are poorly designed.

On the other hand, green license plates are literally shouting to the world that we’re green, you’d better know it, and here’s my “badge of honor” to prove it.

No one would admit it so I’m going to admit it for you but people will absolutely love it and would even PAY to have the privilege of green plates on their car.

People like to be in clubs and feel exclusive. Under the guise of promoting EVs and low emission vehicles, green plates are a great way to reduce carbon emissions by making people feel exclusive and getting everyone else to feel the peer pressure, in a good way.

Get Green plates in the United States, now
