The 2019 Genesis G70 made its big debut in S. Korea also debuting the world’s first 3D cluster which begs the question. Why?

The Genesis brand is a big deal in S. Korea and the home market seems to be taking well to the G70 finally debuting, arguably their home team answer to such cars like the BMW 3-series and Audi A4. A really big selling point that caught my eye, as per their official press release Genesis dropped earlier this week (Oct. 17, 2018) was the world’s first 12.3 inch 3D cluster that supposedly is there for the “Driver’s convenience.” But a part of me is asking, “is this just a gimmick and won’t a 3D screen just distract the driver?”

On a side note, it was a straight mission finding this South Korean press release from a United States search engine so allow me the cathartic experience of writing a sentence expressing my slight annoyance.

Anyhow, in the press release, right after “Genesis launches G70 in 2019” literally the first bullet point they want to stress is that this G70 has “The world’s first 12.3-inch 3D cluster makes driver’s convenienc” which is a direct to English translation by the way.

I, for the life of me, can’t think of a handful of reasons why any driver would need a 3D display. For the past 132 years, since Karl Benz created arguably the first car, humans have gotten along fine with regular gauges, which technically are 3D in and of themselves. And, technically Hyundai uses stereoscopic imagery which displays a slightly different image to each eye producing the illusion of depth, so it’s not real 3D.

A 3D cluster might be a cool party trick but thankfully this Genesis G70 has the option to switch between 3D and 2D for the cluster. There’s also a built-in heads-up display unit which IS useful.

Fortunately, the early reviews of the G70 sedan are filtering in and they only seem to be praising the G70’s power and handling dynamics, so this whole 3D cluster is such a small blip on this car’s true party piece which is under the hood.

This 3D cluster business sounds cool but it’s really a gimmick.
