Ford dropped a new ad featuring Bryan Cranston ushering in a supposed new future for Ford and, buried in the teaser is something shaped like a Mustang, teasing some sort of hybrid future.

What kind of teaser image do you get when you combine the concepts of crossover, the iconic Mustang, and electrification? You get this high-bodied crossover of sorts with a Mustang front end and a blue horse logo. As per Ford in an official ad they dropped earlier this week (Oct. 19,2018) on their social media platforms, the future of Ford will be a panoply of electrification, autonomous tech, and cars that talk to each other. The harbinger of this idealization is what looks to either be a Ford Mustang Hybrid or Mustang inspired hybrid crossover where the greater internet is leaning towards the latter.

Ford isn’t all that secret about its plans for an electrified platform. As per a Medium article heavily influenced by Ford’s Team Edison, a special ops team whose sole purpose is to inject some sort of batteries and motors into their lineup,

My team and I are both proud of and energized by the company’s $11 billion investment to bring 16 fully electric vehicles within a global portfolio of 40 electrified vehicles through 2022. All of us here have unknowingly prepared for this our entire careers.

Towards the end of that Medium article, they specifically outline that not only are they working on the next generation Mustang, which will also most likely have a hybrid powertrain, but they’re also working on what they call an “electric Mustang-inspired utility” which is what I see in this new ad.

Several car outlets believe this Mustang utility will boast 300 miles of range and I tend to agree with that estimate. By 2020, battery tech and motors will definitely be at that level where affordable battery packs packing enough juice for more than 300 miles will be commonplace.

The Mustang is the perfect vehicle to tie the past to the present. There’s no way Ford was going to leave its iconic muscle car out of its future lineup. Instead, it will be its party piece, an electrified one.
