2020 Formula Drift schedule released: Wall & Texas dropped, Sonoma & Englishtown added

Formula Drift dropped their provisional schedule for 2020.Formula Drift’s returning to Sonoma Raceway after nine years.

Formula Drift dropped their provisional 2020 schedule and it’s good or bad news depending on where you live. Formula Drift dropped Texas Motor Speedway and The Wall and in its place, Formula Drift makes its debut at Englishtown Raceway Park and returns to Sonoma Raceway.

That makes eight rounds, same as last year.

Sonoma Raceway, A.K.A. Infineon Raceway (formerly,) is an OG track hosting drifting since FD’s series’s debut back in 2004. Formula Drift moved on from Sonoma in 2011, instead opting for an East Coast round at Palm Beach International Raceway until 2013.

With Golden Gate Drift bringing great Formula Drift Pro drivers like Matt Field, Matt Coffman, and Faruk Kugay into the big leagues and the swelling of grassroots drifting in Northern California thanks to Wednesday Night Sonoma Drift events, returning to Sonoma was a natural choice for Formula Drift.

Local Northern California drifter and advocate of the sport Lexis King dropped this bit of knowledge on us earlier today, further explaining why adding Sonoma is so important to Formula Drift.

Yall we did it!!!!!! Before some dip s*** asks, done what… heres what we did. Made our own scene look interesting, made drifting thrive in Sonoma since FORMULA D pulled out. Kept our head down and showed the drift community that it was a market here with our own events. Now Formula D found it fit to run they're event and the most powerful drift cars in the world on our home setup with the summer jam layout!!!!!!! @faruk.kugay had the Avenue to talk to the right people and explain to them that this is where they needed to be and when the time was right, look where they will be! Englishtown (or E Town,) known more for its drag racing than anything, has a healthy drift community already there, host to Cloob Loose. According to this screenshot of the presentation, Formula Drift is converting the drag strip into a drift arena. Perhaps that means FD drivers must display sort of gymkhana skills on top of solo and tandem drifting.

Formula Drift stays at Englishtown until at least 2022.

No official word why Formula Drift dropped Texas or The Wall. Rumors are abound that it’s just too expensive to run at Texas Motor Speedway.

As someone who lives only a few hours away from Sonoma, mark me excited. I, for one, can’t wait to pre-order tickets.
