A Toyota Prius owner drove into her local mechanic’s shop, complaining about a poor driving car. The way she killed her engine is sort of not surprising.
It’s a good thing the Toyota Prius is a Toyota because if it wasn’t, these fuel-sipping hybrids probably coudn’t handle the abuse owners throw their way. Earlier yesterday I came across a mechanic horror story on Reddit about a Prius owner that almost sounds too good (or bad) to be true, but I’ll let you decide. Her poor Prius came in with a CEL and poor running conditions.

I heard one about an older lady who bought a Prius. One day it had thrown a CEL and started driving like shit, so she took it to the dealer to be fixed. The mechanics started on it and they found the problem. So, they asked her when the last time she had the oil changed and her response was, “Never, the Prius doesn’t have a motor, so why would I do that?” The engine was shot from never having an oil change.
It’s hard to believe that someone could drive a Prius as long as this owner and not realize that their hybrid doesn’t have an engine. But, I wouldn’t put it out of the realm of possibility.
According to JDPower, typical Prius owners are part of the older crowd, well off, making at least six figures, who mainly want the Prius because it’s cheap on gas and reliable enough to get from Point A to Point B.
Contrast that to someone who owns a cheap ol’ Civic, their first car fresh out of college, to get to their 9-5. They need that car to start every time so they’ll know the ins and outs of their car, making sure they’re on top of their maintenance. Their lives depend on it to work.
The Prius is the type of Hybrid that can live a long and fruitful life on tires and oil changes alone. But, I think there are outliers, like this Toyota Prius owner, that are so bad with cars they think their Prius doesn’t “even have a motor.”
A true mechanics horror story if I ever heard one.
