Some Westport, Connecticut residents saw the blues and tunes in their rear-view mirror, not from a Ford Explorer or Crown Vic, but coming from some electric car built in Fremont, California.
Imagine you’re picking up your kid from Greenfarms Academy after your pilates session and you see you’re running late. You check your rearview mirror and see some Tesla Model 3, not a cop car, so you floor it. And then you see it, the reds and blues of a police car. But from the Tesla? Surely, not. But that’s the reality dozens of Westport, Connecticut residents now face if they want be scofflaws when they drive.
Connecticut resident Raymond Belardo was driving along and happened to catch Westport’s finest pulling over a Nissan Rogue, presumably for booking it down this city street.

If you didn’t already know, Westport police is now one of the many policing agencies switching over to electric cars from regular old Ford Police interceptors. Westport Police made the announcement over social media a few weeks before Christmas and are just now putting their Model 3 through its paces.
Although this police car cost tax payers $52,290, Westport police calculated they’ll make up the cost compared to a regular Ford Police Interceptor within three years, that is if they drive this EV as often as possible.
According to Teslarati, Westport has one of the highest concentration of EVs per capita so presumably that means there are hundreds of these Tesla Model 3s running around at any one time. It makes sense to turn this already capable electric car into a police interceptor.
So, if you’re in Westport, you’ve been warned. Keep an eye out for the Tesla Model 3 and try to keep your speeds down.
