During times of crisis, U-Haul is making sure your stuff is safe. If you have a loved one who is a student, let them know!

Because colleges are kicking out students from their dorms all of a sudden in response to the Coronavirus, millions of young people did not properly prepare to haul all their stuff with them at a moment’s notice. U-Haul is here to help. According to U-Haul in an e-mail sent to customers earlier today (Mar. 12,2020) they’re offering 30-days free storage at U-Hauls nationwide if you’ve been displaced out of your dorms or places of housing because of the coronavirus.

Check out U-Haul’s official announcement below, the e-mail sent to customers, and U-Haul’s confirmation.

Here’s the important bit copied verbatim.

“U-Haul is offering 30 days of free self-storage to students who need to move due to the coronavirus. There may be limited availability in your area, so act quickly.” Visit U-Haul.com/storage to find a nearby location.

Several on Twitter pointed out that this is nothing new and U-Haul almost always waives the first 30-days of rental free as long as you rent one of their trucks. U-Haul confirmed they are waiving this stipulation.

You do not have to rent one of their trucks to receive this free discount but, if you’re a student with a lot of stuff and need a truck, you might have to rent one, anyway.

U-Haul also says they’re extending special rates and discounts for any of their services if you need further help so presumably that means, trucks, trailers, packing materials, extra storage etc.

To take use this 30-day free storage, I’m sure U-Haul will ask for some proof that you’re a student like a Student ID or a student e-mail address since, unfortunately, there are always opportunists who’ll use this situation to get free storage.

This philanthropy is not new. As mentioned, U-Haul often does this when a local community needs storage space. Just this week U-Haul announced to Hartford, CT residents they’re letting them also get 30-days free storage for those displaced by the local fire.

This is also just honest-to-goodness and solid marketing. If you want customers for life, this is one way to do it. Where do you think these students will go when they need rentals later in life?

Kudos to you, U-Haul.
