Seattle, Washington protesters have been taking over freeways over the past three weeks, protesting the death of George Floyd.

A 27-year-old driver in a Jaguar XJ sedan, later identified as Dawit Kelete of Seattle, WA, is behind bars and could be charged with vehicular manslaughter after allegedly running over two protesters after driving through a blocked entrance to I-5. Protesters have been taking over freeways over the past several weeks.

A witness observing the protest caught the accident on camera. Warning. The footage below is hard to watch.

One victim was live-streaming at the time (linked here.) Before the video stops you can hear protesters warning others that a car is approaching, “Car…Car!” In the background you can hear the Jaguar’s engine rev up and drive towards the protesters before the driver eventually hits two of them.

Here’s the blind corner where the Jaguar XJ accelerated towards protesters.

Shortly after the hit and run, several witnesses jumped into their cars and gave chase. One of them blocked the suspect in before police arrived.

Police say Kelete drove the wrong way onto the Stewart Street off-ramp to enter the interstate. They believe alcohol was not a contributing factor.

Both victims hit were transported to Harborview Medical Center. While both victims arrived in critical condition, one victim, later ID’d as 24 year-old Summer Taylor, died hours later.

The other victim, 32-year-old Diaz Love is still in serious condition in the intensive care unit as of Saturday night.

Video on Twitter shows a makeshift memorial setup for both victims.

In response to repeated and unimpeded protesters entering highways, police are now not allowing and will enforce any attempts to block freeways “with consequences for criminal conduct.”

A GoFundMe was quickly set up for Diaz Love with a goal of $25,000. That goal was quickly surpassed, close to $27,000 as of this writing.
