Looking for an oil filter made in the USA? These brands are your best bet.

Despite OEM and aftermarkets parts increasingly being outsourced to countries with cheaper labor, a lot of parts are still made here in the United States, oil filters included.

Listed below are oil filter makers and brands with US factories.

As you’ll soon realize, while there are more than a dozen oil filter brands made in the USA, a lot share the same manufacturer (Champion Labs and Mann+Hummel.) It’s a fact worth remembering if you’re agonizing over brands.

This list is by no means exhaustive. If there’s a major oil filter maker still making filters in the U S of A that I’ve missed and you’d like to see added to the list, leave a comment below!

ACDelco

(Made in the United States) ACDelco, HQ’d in Grand Blanc, MI and parts manufacturer for GM, partners with Champion Laboratories to make its private label of oil filters. Champ Labs has manufacturing facilities in Illinois and South Carolina. Champ Labs is part of the First Brands Group.

Amsoil Oil Filters

(Made in the United States) Amsoil, HQ’d in Superior, WS, is known for its 100% American made lubricants. Amsoil partners with Champion Laboratories to produce its private label oil filters. Champion Labs has manufacturing facilities in Illinois and South Carolina. Champ Labs is part of the First Brands Group.

Baldwin

(Majority made in the United States) Baldwin Filters, headquartered in Kearney, Neb, is part of the Parker Hannifin Corporation Filtration Group. Since Baldwin acquired Hastings Premium Filters, most, if not all, Baldwin oil filters are made in the United States.

Bosch

(Majority made in the United States) Bosch USA, HQ’d in Farmington Hills, MI, partners with Purolater to make its oil filters. Purolater, owned by Mann + Hummel, has its main manufacturing facility in Fayetteville, NC.

Carquest

(Majority made in the United States) Carquest, HQ’d in Raleigh, NC, partners with Champion Laboratories to make its automotive oil filters. Champion Labs has manufacturing facilities in Illinois and South Carolina. It’s worth noting Champ Labs has a manufacturing facility in Shanghai, China, with evidence some oil filters are made there. But, as of this writing, their automotive oil filters are still US made. Champ Labs is part of the First Brands Group.

Donaldson

(Some oil filters made in the United States) Donaldson Filtration is headquartered in Bloomington, MN. According to a BITOG forum member, “Donaldson 3” and 3 1/2” diameter cans are built in Mexico. The rest are private label, made by Champion laboratories.”

Fleetguard

(Majority made in the United States) Fleetguard, aka Cummins Filtration, is the filtration division of Cummins Engines. Fleetguard oil filters are made in Cookeville, TN and Neillsville, WI. Fleetguard has manufacturing facilities in Mexico and Australia, so you can expect some Fleetguard oil filters to be made there, too. Consult the oil filter box and casing to confirm.

FRAM

(Majority made in the United States) Since 1932, FRAM is probably the largest oil filter maker in the United States. FRAM is currently part of the First Brands Group, a global automotive parts company with nine market leading brands.

When FRAM launched their Ultra Synthetic Oil Filter Design in Sept, 2021, they said, “Over 90% of FRAM Ultra Synthetic® oil filters are developed, engineered, and made here in the USA.” It’s safe to assume 10 percent of that line of oil filter is made elsewhere.

So,not all of FRAMs oil filters are made in the United States but a majority are.

FRAM has manufacturing and marketing facilities in Rochester Hills, Michigan; Hebron, Kentucky; and Greenville, Ohio.

FRAM has seven lines of oil filters in their lineup, including their iconic Extra Guard, all the way to their FRAM Titanium oil filter.

MicroGard (O’Reilly House Brand)

(Some oil filters made in the United States) O’Reilly Auto parts, HQ’d in Springfield, MO, partners with Mann+Hummel, specifically with Wix and Purolater, to produce their MicroGard brand of oil filters. There’s also evidence O’Reilly works with Premium Guard and STP to make their MicroGard select oil filters.

I’m fairly certain the standard MicroGard oil filter (Not MicroGard Select) is made by U.S. based Wix and Purolater oil filter factories.

Some MicroGard select oil filters might be made in the United States but there’s evidence many aren’t. Consult the oil filter box and casing to confirm.

Motorcraft

(Made in the United States) Motorcraft, HQ’d in Dearborn, MI and official parts supplier to the Ford Motor Co, partners with Purolater to make its oil filters. Purolater, owned by Mann+Hummel, manufacturers its oil filters at its main manufacturing facility in Fayetteville, NC.

Purolater

(Majority made in the United States) Purolater, headquartered in Fayetteville, NC, is now owned by Mann+Hummel. Purolater still makes a majority of its oil filters in the United States but, now part of a global filter conglomerate, you may see Purolater oil filters made in different countries. Consult the oil filter box and casing to confirm.

Royal Purple

(Made in the United States) Royal Purple, HQ’d in Porter, Texas, partners with Champion Laboratories to make its oil filters. Champion Labs has manufacturing facilities in Illinois and South Carolina. Champ Labs is part of the First Brands Group.

Supertech (WalMart house brand)

(Majority made in the United States) Walmart used to partner with Wix but now produces its own line of oil filters through Champion Laboratories. With Champion Labs manufacturing facilities in South Carolina and Illinonis, Supertech oil filters are 100 percent Made in the USA. Champ Labs is part of the First Brands Group.

STP

(Made in the United States) STP, HQ’d in Boca Raton, FL, partners with Champion Laboratories to make its oil filters. Champion Labs has manufacturing facilities in Illinois and South Carolina. Champ Labs is part of the First Brands Group.

WIX

(Some oil filters made in the United States) WIX is an American filter company with headquarters in Gastonia, NC. Since WIX is owned by filter conglomerate Mann+Hummell, many of WIX oil filters are not made in the United States. Regardless, the majority of canister/spin-on Wix oil filters are still made in the United States. Consult the oil filter box and casing to confirm.

  1. Excellent article.
    Please keep us updated.
    How about:
    Denso Oil Filter
    K&N Oil Filters
    Magnetti Marelli Oil Filter
    Mobil 1 Oil Filter

  2. I have bought a Purolator Boss and NAPA Gold oil filters for our 2014 buick verano 2.4L this is A cartridge type filter which i really don’t like. Anyway both have stamped on the end CHINA on them, is this just the plastic ends? Or the whole filter including the media?
Its frustrating i prefer American made products, don’t trust China

    • It’s especially frustrating considering you’re paying made-in-USA prices, when you can buy the same Chinese stuff off-label for literally $1.50 each.

  3. Has Fram fixed the problem they had ? AC DELCO boxes are covered with Chinese writing so that leads me to think they have shipped their production overseas. Seems like Champion labs make the majority of USA made filters regardless of the packaging or color of the filter .
