The rideshare driver believes the wrong way driver was driving under the influence.

Rideshare driver and presumed Ohio resident /u/MrBuffUnicorn shared dashcam footage from Feb 24, 2024 from North Olmsted, OH to the /r/IdiotsInCars subreddit showing the surprising moment when he encountered another driver on the wrong side of the road headed towards him.

Check out the shocking moment captured on dashcam below.

[oc] Wrong Side of the Road Driver, Saturday Night!

The incident happened on OH-17 (A.K.A. Brookpark Rd.) in Olmsted, OH between Grace Rd. and Columbia Rd. (Exact location on Google Maps linked here.)

In OP’s video, we can see him driving along OH-17 in the middle of a rideshare stint in what looks like the middle of the night.

Shortly after passing Grace Rd, we see the bright headlights of another car headed right towards him.

Thankfully, the other car wasn’t careening down OH-17, and was instead creeping along.

I assume they were semi-aware that something was not right.

We then see the driver steer two wheels onto the center median before creeping by OP.

It’s not clear if the driver made a U-turn shortly after or fully hopped onto the center median to drive to the other side.

“I’m pretty sure they were under the influence. I hope they made it home safely and are sleeping it off,” OP replied in the comments.

Driving defensively means keeping your wits about you and scanning the road ahead.

Thankfully, OP was able to spot the wrong way driver and slowed accordingly.

As to why OP didn’t initially swerve out of the way.

“There was another car slightly behind my car in the other lane,” OP clarifies.”

OP doesn’t mention if he called police, but best practices recommend doing so.

According to VZ Law Firm, before or after encountering a wrong way driver, you should,

“Navigate to the right side of the road, along the shoulder if one is available, and come to a complete stop; turn your hazard lights on to warn other motorists of your presence. Then, dial 911 to alert law enforcement to the presence of a wrong-way driver.”
